| The University of Arizona has a full-time diversity manager who focuses on developing new small, minority and women-owned business sources. He is an active board member of the Grand Canyon Minority Supplier Development Council, which is a chapter of the National Minority Supplier Development Council, the larges minority business networking organization in the country, and the co-chair of the Supplier Diversity Division of the National Association of Educational Buyers. He is also one of the leaders of the Small business Development Council of Southern Arizona, which coordinates Small Business Week and Minority Enterprise Development Week for Southern Arizona. The UA Supplier Diversity Manager works with the Tucson Hispanic and Black Chambers of Commerce, the Arizona Department of Commerce, the U.S. Small business Administration and the Minority Business Development Agency in providing services to minority-owned, women-owned and other small businesses. The Diversity Manager meets with more than 100 different small, minority and women-owned businesses throughout the year to walk them through the bidding process and procedures of the University of Arizona. He has set goals to mirror the general federal goals for small, minority and women-owned businesses, as well as other targeted groups. Those goals are 25 percent for small businesses; five percent for minority and women-owned businesses; and three percent for all other categories. Those goals are monitored and contract awards are reported annually by small business classification to comply with federal and state guidelines and to make modifications to procedures if necessary. |
